Assam (Assamese: অসম) formerly the Assam Province (British India), is one among the eight northeastern state of India. Situated between 20° N and 28° N latitude and 90° E and 96° E longitude, the state is surrounded by Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya. Long columns of history come alive through rows of ancient monuments and ruins of bygone ages. Temples of pristine charm enliven memories of the eastern city of stars. The land is particularly famous for its natural beauty. The landscape includes tea gardens, the river Brahmaputra, many historical monuments and temples. A state with an abundance wilderness, Assam has five national parks, eighteen wildlife sanctuaries and is home to two-thirds of the population of the unique one-horned rhino.

Another aspect that separates Assam from the rest of Indian states is the rich composite culture of the state. Assamese constitute the majority of the state's population but the state has over two dozen other big and small tribal groups with many of them having their own language, writing system, dance forms and traditions.
